With the death of his wife, young Max (Dolph Lund Grenner) moves from town to town, surviving any happenings with the help of a motorcycle mechanic he meets in the course of a cross-country ride. Young falls in love with a local girl in town, Bella (Emma Stone), but he soon discovers her affair with a local sheriff.

When Max discovers that his late wife's killer had been a friend of Bella's, he tracks Bella to New Mexico where he attacks and kills her. The sheriff, recognizing Max as the criminal responsible for Bella's death, assigns him to the case but wants to know what happened to Bella before he puts Max in jail.
Meanwhile, Bella's new boyfriend (Kris Angel), angry over not getting a chance to see her, joins the hunt to find out what really happened to Bella and is drawn into the middle of the cross-country chase involving Max, and Bella as well as several others.
Charlize Theron plays the title role as Max, a good-hearted and kindhearted young man with a heart of gold. Theron's performance is supported by a talented cast that includes Dolph Lundgren, Natacha McEvedre, Jessica Alba, and Efren Ramirez. The chemistry between Theron and McEvedre is outstanding and their relationship as lovers may be the most believable in the film. The other three leads, Alba, and Ramirez, have good but brief chemistry throughout the movie, but their interactions are rarely entertaining.
"Fast and furious" is an action movie, at least on the surface. The first twenty minutes or so are spent catching up with the story, introducing Max and explaining the circumstances of his loss of Bella. The fighting, which takes place on the streets of New York City, is engaging and exciting. However, it becomes apparent fairly quickly that the violence has no place in this film. The movie has one too many non-stop explosions, car chases, gun fights, and shootouts that go on forever. By the end of the film, you have forgotten how much fun it was to watch the fight scenes because you have already been hurt and maimed a few times.
What the director failed to recognize, I assume, is that people want to be heroes. No one likes to feel vulnerable, but at the same time, we want to have a clear reason to do so. In movies, when a character goes from being a loser to a hero (in the most dramatic and believable ways possible), we want to see that change. Unfortunately, in this film, we get brief clips of Max's character changing from a loser to a hero...then back again. It's not enough.
The only other thing I can say about "Fast and Furious" is that Mike De Luca did a nice job as a director. His ability to condense multiple scenes into a short scene makes the viewer's experience of watching this movie fun and quick. However, if you enjoy mindless action that won't take you out of your seat for more than five minutes, then this is not the movie for you. If, however, you enjoy watching long action sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat? Then "Fast and Furious" is the perfect movie for you.
